DepEd regional directors urged to pay mobile teachers
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 2008
MANILA (PNA)-– The director of the Department of Education Bureau of Alternative Learning System (DepEd-BALS) has appealed on Wednesday to the DepEd regional directors to immediately release the salary and other financial incentives of mobile teachers.
Dr. Carolina Guerrero of DepEd-BALS said she got reports that many of the country’s mobile teachers have not yet received their monthly wages and allowances even as DepEd national office has dispensed compensation to the regional directors.
“We're calling on the regional directors to pay our mobile teachers. They should understand the difficulties these teachers have to undergo to give education to the far-flung and depressed areas,” Guerrero stressed.
Based on the complaints, she said the teachers are being asked first to provide documents such as transportation receipts before they are given their salary and allowance.
“How can you get receipts from tricyles, boats or horse whenever they transport our mobile teachers? At times, they have to walk very far distances just to save fare money,” said Guerrero.
“Sana huwag na nating ipagkait ang maliit na kaginhawaan para sa mga guro para makasulong ang pagkakaloob ng edukasyon sa ating mamamayan sa pamamagitan ng alternatibong pamamaraan,” she added.
DepEd data showed that mobile teachers receive a measly P5,000 monthly salary plus P2, 000 transportation allowance.
Part-time teachers, on the other hand, get P1, 000 to P1, 500 while the regional coordinators are paid P2, 000 to P2, 500.
DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus had earlier cited the contribution ofmobile teachers to alternative education, stressing “they serve as bridges for the department to reach out to all kinds of learners.''
To date, there at least 1, 381 mobile teachers who are deployed to deprived, depressed and underserved areas of the country. (PNA)
