PGMA inspires education sector to improve country's educational system

Cebu, Philippines -- In a meeting with Cebu's education sector leaders recently, President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo inspired the sector to assist her in setting up the necessary mechanisms to improve the country's educational system.
The President said that education is the foundation of economic prosperity and individual liberty, justice and self-worth. She further said that at the start of her term, education has always been one of the top priorities on her list.
In her speech at the 45th anniversary of Angeles University Foundation in Angeles City in Pampanga, Arroyo also reiterated her administration's resolve to improve the quality of the country's education as she ties it up with her poverty alleviation goals in the next three years.
"Over the next three years, we will translate the positive results of our reforms to real benefits for the people. We will increase investment in our country, in our people to first of all, improve our infrastructure to create an environment in which businesses feel confident to expand and employ more people, because more jobs means less poverty," the President said.
She added that her government vows to improve social services such as health insurance subsidies for indigent families and food-for-school nutrition programs and "boost educational support in our efforts to reduce poverty by investing in better school buildings, new textbooks and teaching materials, and training programs for teachers and school administrators," Arroyo stressed.
Meeting with the President were members of the Coordinating Council of Private Education Associations (COCOPEA) led by University of San Carlos President Rev. Fr. Roderick Salazar, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner Saturnino Ocampo, Presidential Adviser on Education Mona Valisno, secretary Cerge Remonde, director general of PMS.
According to Remonde, the Cebu meeting was the second of a series of nationwide meetings with the stakeholders in the education sector. The first was done in Manila. (PIA-Cebu)
