released 2/5/2008
MANILA (PNA) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) has directed heads of public and private elementary and secondary schools across the country to intensify campaign against drug abuse.
Education Undersecretary for Regional Operations Ramon Bacani said, “Intensify education campaign against drug abuse through symposia, seminars, film showing, community assemblies, Parent-Teacher-Community Associations (PTCA) conferences, and print and broadcast media.”
Bacani said that concepts on drug abuse prevention should be integrated into appropriate subject areas, in both levels, as well as in the school organ.
He asked school authorities to mobilize student organizations and scouts, including coordination with local government officials, PTCA, and non-government organizations in support of drug abuse prevention advocacies.
The intensified campaign against drug abuse among students was ordered following random drug testing results revealed that there was 10 percent drug use in six regions of the country, that included the National Capital Region (NCR).
In 2004, the Department, through its Health and Nutrition Center conducted drug testing of high school students in 17 randomly selected schools in each region to determine the prevalence of drug users among students.
The program also assessed the impact of school and community-based drug prevention program.
