DepEd Conducts National Development and Competition
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2008

MANILA (PNA) –- The Department of Education (DepEd), through the Center for Students and Co-Curricular Affairs (CSCA), has conducted the 6th Student Technologists and Entrepreneurs of the Philippines-National Skills Development and Competition (STEP-NSDC) recently in Davao City.

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said, “Skills development is a vital component in the department’s thrust of improving the quality of basic education in our country.”

With the theme “STEP: Upgrading Skills, Improving Lives,” the activity developed and improved technical and functional skills of participants in home economics, agriculture and fishery arts, industrial arts, entrepreneurship and computer education.

STEP-NSDC highlighted skills competition for elementary and secondary levels in home economics, agricultural technology, industrial arts, retail trade, entrepreneurship and information and communications technology (ICT) integration.

The activity included non-skills contest such as parliamentary procedure, Mr. & Ms. STEP, techno quiz and the STEP bazaar. The Business Plan Competition and the STEP Awards for Outstanding Contributions and Achievements was also featured in the event.

Cash prizes, trophies, medals and certificates of award were given to the winners.

Established in 2001, the STEP is the official co-curricular organization of DepEd in the Edukasyong Pantahan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP), Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), and Technical-Vocational Education (TVE).

The organization provides students with practical experiences, technical know-how and opportunities in home economics, agricultural technology, industrial arts, entrepreneurship, and ICT integration to strengthen national competitiveness and productivity. (PNA)
